Calvinism and Predestination

This page and section is being reworked considerably, but in the meantime we have retained links to the following articles and books we recommend.

Ephesians 1 and Romans 8

The Five Points of Calvinism Considered - By David Servant of ShepherdServe.org (used with permission). A critical review of John Piper's arguments for Calvinism, predestination and eternal security. John Piper is a (rare) five point Calvinist, and one of the doctrine's more skillful defenders. We are glad to report that Piper is a sincere man and a brother in Christ. Nevertheless, he promotes a dangerous false doctrine.

The 9th Roman Calvinist: A Critical Re-examination - By Nick Liguori. Contrary to the views of many, Romans 9 does not require a Calvinistic interpretation. Instead, Romans 9 and its context actually militates against Calvinism and predestination. Let it also be known that Christians did not teach a Calvinistic interpretation of Romans 9 until St. Augustine in the 5th century. Before Augustine, the Gnostics were the ones citing Romans 9 in support of their doctrine of predestination--very similar to modern Calvinists! But the early Christians correctly called the Gnostics heretics!

His Ashes Cry Out Against John Calvin - By Dan Corner of EvangelicalOutreach.org (Used by Permission)

The Early Christians Rejected Calvinism:
"After the Reformation, evangelical Christians tried for centuries to convince a scoffing world that our lives and eternal fates were arbitrarily predestined by God, and that this was a God we should love. How ironic, therefore, that originally it was the Christians who tried to convince a scoffing world that our lives and fates were not predestined." -David Bercot 1
